MotoGp.com (31/05/08) report. Valentino Rossi has taken pole position for Sunday's Italian Grand Prix, the seven-times World Champion in the process setting setting a new lap record at Mugello.

The Italian lapped the 3.259-mile circuit in a time of one minute 48.130 seconds on his Yamaha, bettering the previous record pole time, set by Spaniard Sete Gibernau two years ago, by more than 0.8 seconds.

Victory in Sunday's race will represent his seventh successive Italian MotoGP win.

Spain's Dani Pedrosa was second with Italian Loris Capirossi third, although the latter earned that largely on the back of a tow from Rossi as he followed his compatriot around on the pole-setting lap.

World champion Casey Stoner was fourth for Ducati ahead of American Colin Edwards, who had led qualifying for long spells.

The top five were separated by just over a quarter-of-a-second.

Rossi's team-mate, Spanish rookie sensation Jorge Lorenzo, was seventh ahead of Britain's James Toseland.
